HP Touch Pad – Competition has Arrived

by Blake on September 22, 2011

HP Touch Pad is supposed to be the third party that will make the battle between the iPad 2 and Galaxy Tab 10.1 more intense, and that’s why the fans are so anxious about the release date. They only have to wait until tomorrow, because HP proudly announced that it will be available in stores on 1st of July. On the flip side, there are several reasons to be a little pessimistic about its chances of success, as it looks like except for the hardcore fans of webOS, few will rush to purchase it. One of the first issues, that is easy to notice is the size and weight of the HP Touch Pad, which is considerable bigger, thicker and heavier than the iPad 2 and Galaxy Tab 10.1.

hp-palm-touchpad-tabletIt’s pretty difficult to find a plausible excuse for it, since it has the same 9.7-inch display, and it’s made of a black, unassuming plastic. What’s inside is equally unimpressive, not in terms of sheer numbers, as it features a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor and 1Ghz or Ram, but as speed and responsiveness. While browsing is performed at decent speeds, games feel sluggish and the apps are sometimes loading slower than they were supposed to. If you plan on watching movies in high definition, you won’t have any problems and the display itself is impressive, with crispy colors and excellent contrast.

As for software, webOS 3.0 is not for everyone, but the ones who love it have a reason to rejoice as the latest version is faster and more stable, with several tweaks that enhance the user experience. One thing that the critics will be quick to point out is the absence of a rear-facing camera, but if we are to be perfectly fair, this camera is overrated for tablets. The problem is that the HP Touch Pad is offering less than both the iPad 2 and Galaxy Tab 10.1, for exactly the same amount of money, which makes it an unlikely choice.
