Motorola Photon 4G – Motorola’s Swan Song

by Blake on January 1, 2012

This might be Motorola’s swan song or at least their last important smartphone released before the acquisition by Google, but it is one grand exit. The Photon 4G is truly a super-phone, something that strives to rival with Samsung Galaxy S2 and other speed demons running on Android. Speaking of which, the latest version of Gingerbread is available on the Photon 4G, something that not many phone owners can brag about. In conjunction with a 1GHz Tegra 2 processor and 1 GHz of RAM, Motorola’s latest release can compete in terms of speed with pretty much any smartphone out there.

motorola-photonThe same is true for the battery life, and unless you are a power user who hardly puts the phone done, the Photon 4G will easily last a day between recharges. All the applications run smoothly, and if you watch a lot of videos, you will be charmed by how clear they are displayed on the screen and how good the viewing angles are. The 4.3-inch qHD TFT panel with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixel is responsible for that, and this is something that will remind the savvy consumers of the Droid X2. There are several difference between the Photon 4G and the Droid line in terms of style, with smooth and curvier edges.

In theory, the Photon 4G is fitted with a powerful camera, and it can capture videos in 720p high definition, but the problem is that there is no auto-focus, and the single detent camera button is uninspired to say the least. Except for this small issue and maybe the inability of capturing videos in 1020p, the camera is decent and to be perfectly fair this is Motorola Photon 4G’s biggest lacking. We’ll see how the company fares under Google patronage, but this latest release is outstanding.
