R.I.P Symbian

by Blake on August 24, 2011

We knew this moment will come and the day when Nokia signed the partnership with Microsoft, it was clear even for the most dedicated fans that the days of Symbian are over. This operating system had a good run, almost too good initially and that was the main cause for its downfall. Nokia dwelled on their supremacy and failed to realize that all around them things were moving fast and failed to adjust to the change. Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there, and that’s exactly what happened to the Finnish developer and manufacturer.

The partnership with Microsoft was needed to save the company from oblivion, and it comes as no surprise that all the resources will be oriented into the new direction. Windows Phones have to revive their dwindling business and at the same time make Microsoft the dominant player, in a race where it barely makes the podium at this time. Since this competition will last indefinitely, Symbian was sacrificed and the smartphones using this operating system will no longer be sold in the United States.

The decision is final, and the resources will be used to make the most of the new line of Windows Phones, which should hit the shelves in a matter of months. Not even the MeeGo powered N9, which is a gem, will feature on the US market, which proves Nokia’s commitment to their partners. Time will tell whether this new team will conquer the market or if they sink into mediocrity, but for the time being, one thing is certain. Symbian is almost gone, and this final blow will soon be followed by the obituary, a moment that will be remembered especially by those who’ve enjoyed it for many years.
